New Waltham Academy Planet Protectors

Who We Are & What We Do

Planet Protectors is an eco-group, consisting of one child, from each class, across the school. Our aim is to protect our planet, inspire others and make the world a better place for the future.

Although there is only one child from each class in Planet Protectors, we like to get the whole school involved in what we do. We have challenged the whole school to take part in initiatives such as Eco-School’s ‘Cut Your Carbon’, Duracell’s ‘Big Battery Hunt’, whole school ‘seedball throwing’ events and our own initiative ‘Nothing In A Wrapper Day’. We recently had a whole school Design and Technology day, which involved children teaming up to design and create a Planet Protectors robot mascot out of recycled materials (plastic bottles, containers etc.)

We have a Planet Protectors display board in the hall, where we display our achievements and what we have been up to so that all of the school can see. We also have our Planet Protectors library, which is filled with books about animals, wildlife nature and the environment. We encourage other children to read books from the Planet Protectors library by choosing and displaying a ‘Book of the Month’.

Our Current Focus

This year, we are hoping to become a ‘Hedgehog Friendly School’ and we are aiming for the gold award. We started our journey with a visit from Charlie’s Hedgehog Care, who taught us all about hedgehogs, how they look after them and we could do to help them.

We have also:

  • Became ‘habitat mappers’ using National Education Nature Park website.
  • Created posters about hedgehogs to display on our Planet Protectors board.
  • Completed a ‘Hedgehog Hazard Audit’ of the school grounds and worked on making it a safer place by carrying out regular litter picks and holding our annual ‘Nothing In A Wrapper’ day.
  • Created a ‘hedgehog haven’ wildlife corer on the school field by planting more tree saplings, building a log and leaf pile, planting tulip bulbs (donated by Your Place Grimsby, relocating compost bins, placing a hedgehog house and sprinkling wildflower seeds.
  • Set up a wildlife camera in the hedgehog haven corner to observe the wildlife that visits it.
  • Participated in Hedgehog Awareness Week by creating a hedgehog quiz for our classmates to complete and learn all about hedgehogs.

If you see a hedgehog that needs help, please see the advice on the leaflet below and/or contact Charlie’s Hedgehog Care on 07887 835734.
